This post explores how character, particularly as defined by frameworks like the VIA Institute on Character and Ivey's Leader Character framework, differs from personality and why this distinction matters.


Defining Personality

Personality refers to the unique patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make up an individual’s personal style. It is largely influenced by genetic factors and early life experiences. Personality traits, such as extroversion, agreeableness, or conscientiousness, are relatively stable over time and are often assessed using tools like the Big Five Personality Traits model.

These strengths, such as curiosity, bravery, kindness, and fairness, are seen as universal and contribute to a fulfilling life.


  • Ivey’s Leader Character Framework: This framework is particularly focused on leadership and identifies 11 character dimensions essential for effective leadership, including courage, humility, integrity, and empathy. It emphasizes that character is central to leadership effectiveness, influencing not only decisions but also how leaders are perceived by others.
